What should we do about hypertension? Hypertension is quite common nowadays. However, there is no need to be overly anxious when experiencing high blood pressure, as it is a phenomenon resulting from a disorder in the regulation of our advanced central nervous system. So, what exactly should we do when faced with hypertension?


What causes hypertension and what are the different types?


There are numerous reasons for elevated blood pressure, which can generally be categorized into two main types. One type is called "secondary hypertension". For example, high blood pressure may occur when a person has acute nephritis. Once the acute nephritis is cured, the blood pressure will return to normal. In some cases, people with endocrine gland tumors, such as pheochromocytoma, can also experience high blood pressure. When the tumor is surgically removed, the blood pressure will return to normal. This "secondary hypertension" is relatively rare, accounting for approximately 5% of all hypertension cases. The other type of hypertension is known as "primary hypertension", which accounts for more than 95% of hypertensive patients. Its causes are rather complex and are closely related to genetics. It is the result of the interaction between genetic factors and various acquired factors. Currently, there is still no radical cure for it.


What should we do about hypertension? Regulate it through a reasonable diet.


  1. First and foremost, it is necessary to control calorie intake. It is advisable to consume complex carbohydrates, such as starch and corn. Eat less glucose, fructose, and sucrose, as these simple sugars can easily lead to an increase in blood lipids, which is detrimental to hypertension.

  2. Control the intake of fat. A large amount of fat may accumulate significantly on the blood vessel walls, exacerbating hypertension. When cooking, choose vegetable oil instead of animal oil, and you can eat more marine fish.

  3. Appropriately intake some protein. Generally speaking, the recommended protein intake is 1 gram per kilogram of body weight per day, which is beneficial for reducing blood pressure.


What should we do about hypertension? Regulate it through appropriate exercise.


Studies have shown that engaging in more exercise can effectively lower blood pressure. You can do more aerobic exercises, such as walking, jogging, swimming, cycling, etc. It should be noted that do not exercise when you are hungry or immediately after a meal. When finishing exercise, you need to stop gradually instead of abruptly, as sudden cessation can have an adverse effect on blood pressure. If any discomfort occurs during exercise, stop immediately, and in severe cases, seek medical attention right away.
