Acupuncture and moxibustion is a unique medical treatment method created by the working people in ancient China, boasting a long history. For thousands of years, people have used metal needles, moxa cones, or moxa rolls to insert needles and apply moxibustion at specific parts of the human body to treat diseases and relieve pain. As a result, the unique theory of the human meridian and acupoint system has been established. It has become a wonderful flower in Chinese medicine and enjoys a high reputation around the world.

Acupuncture and moxibustion consists of "acupuncture" and "moxibustion" and is one of the important components of traditional Chinese medicine. Its content includes the theory of acupuncture and moxibustion, acupoints, acupuncture and moxibustion techniques, and related instruments. In the process of its formation, application, and development, it has distinct cultural and regional characteristics of the Chinese nation. It is a precious heritage born out of the Chinese nation's culture and scientific traditions.

As early as in the Neolithic Age, people used "bian stones" to pierce a certain part of the human body for treating diseases. The Classic of Mountains and Seas states, "There is a jade-like stone that can be made into a needle", which is an early record of stone needles. The emergence of moxibustion therapy was formed after the discovery and application of fire. The Huangdi Neijing (Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor) in the Qin and Han dynasties states, "When the internal organs are cold, fullness diseases occur, and the appropriate treatment is moxibustion", referring to moxibustion techniques. It describes in detail the shapes of the nine needles and contains a large amount of records about the theory and techniques of acupuncture and moxibustion.

During the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, the acupuncture and moxibustion therapy had become quite mature, and there were many doctors proficient in acupuncture and moxibustion. Bian Que, recorded in the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji), is one of the representative figures. Bian Que is known as the "Ancestor of Chinese Medicine". His miraculous acupuncture techniques that could bring the dying back to life and his moving deeds of healing the wounded and rescuing the dying have been passed down through generations. So far, in places such as Neiqiu, Hebei Province, there are still the Quewang Temple, Quewang Shrine in memory of Bian Que, as well as various traditional folk sacrificial activities.

The Jiu Jing of the Eleven Meridians of the Foot and Arm and Jiu Jing of the Eleven Yin-Yang Meridians unearthed from the Mawangdui Han Tombs in Changsha, Hunan Province, and the Mai Shu (Book of Meridians) unearthed from the Zhangjiashan Han Tombs in Jiangling, Hubei Province, all record the circulation of the meridians and the main diseases they are related to. A small black-lacquered wooden figure unearthed from the Western Han Dynasty tombs at Shuangbaoshan in Mianyang, Sichuan Province, has the paths of the meridians marked vertically and horizontally on its front and back surfaces. It is the earliest physical object of the human meridian model discovered in China so far.
