There are four classic works of traditional Chinese medicine: Huangdi Neijing (Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor), Nanjing (Classic of Difficult Issues), Shanghan Zabing Lun (Treatise on Febrile and Miscellaneous Diseases), and Shennong Bencao Jing (Shennong's Herbal Classic). Among them, Huangdi Neijing was the earliest to be written and contains the most content, becoming a classic in the treasure trove of Chinese medicine.
Some people say that Huangdi Neijing is a "divine book" that is obscure and difficult to understand. As the saying goes, "Half of the Analects of Confucius can govern the world", and truly understanding Huangdi Neijing can also mean that "Half of the Neijing can nourish one's life".
Shanghan Lun was written based on Tangye Jingfa (Canon of Decoction Methods). [13] Tangye Jingfa is said to have been written by Yi Yin, the prime minister of the Shang Dynasty. Tangye Jingfa consists of 32 volumes.
It has a profound influence on countries within the Chinese character cultural circle. For example, Vietnamese traditional medicine [14], Korean medicine [16], Japanese medicine, and Korean traditional medicine [15] and so on have all developed based on traditional Chinese medicine.
Traditional Chinese medicine takes the theory of yin-yang and the five elements as its theoretical basis. It regards the human body as a unified entity of qi (vital energy), form, and spirit. Through the method of combining the four diagnostic methods of "observation, listening and smelling, inquiring, and pulse-taking and palpation", it explores the causes, natures, and locations of diseases, analyzes the pathological mechanisms as well as the changes of the five zang organs and six fu organs, meridians and joints, qi, blood, and body fluids within the human body, judges the ebb and flow of pathogenic factors and healthy qi, and then derives the names of diseases and summarizes the syndromes. According to the principle of syndrome differentiation and treatment, it formulates treatment methods such as "sweating, vomiting, purging, harmonizing, warming, clearing, tonifying, and resolving". It uses a variety of treatment means such as traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion, tuina (Chinese therapeutic massage), massage, cupping, qigong, and dietary therapy to enable the human body to achieve yin-yang harmony and recovery.
Since the end of the Qing Dynasty, China has been invaded by Western powers, and the national fortune has declined. Traditional Chinese medicine has fallen into a debate about its survival or abolition. The same is true for Japanese medicine and Korean traditional medicine, which belong to the same Chinese medical system. Traditional Chinese medicine and Chinese herbal medicine have been applied for thousands of years on the ancient land of China. After thousands of years of clinical practice, it has been proven that Chinese traditional medicine and Chinese herbal medicine are indeed effective and feasible both in treating diseases, preventing diseases, and maintaining health. Before Western medicine was introduced into China, our ancestors used traditional Chinese medicine and Chinese herbal medicine to treat diseases and saved countless lives. The treatment of diseases by traditional Chinese medicine is macroscopic and comprehensive. Traditional Chinese medicine is so called in contrast to Western medicine. Before Western medicine flowed into China, traditional Chinese medicine was basically not called "traditional Chinese medicine", but had unique and richly connotative appellations.
In ancient times, the ancestors of the Chinese nation discovered that some animals and plants could relieve pain and accumulated some knowledge of using drugs. With the evolution of humans, they began to purposefully search for drugs and methods for preventing and treating diseases. The so-called "Shennong tasted hundreds of herbs" and "medicine and food share the same origin" were the true portrayals of that time. The invention of wine in the Xia Dynasty (approximately 2070 - 1600 BC) and decoction in the Shang Dynasty (1600 - 1046 BC) provided help for improving the effectiveness of drug use. Entering the Western Zhou Dynasty (1046 - 771 BC), there began to be a division of labor among dietitians, physicians for internal diseases, physicians for surgical diseases, and veterinarians.
